Hi everyone! I am Helena, Research Assistant at Ali’s lab. In 2022, I graduated from Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). Next course 2022-2023, I fulfil a master’s degree in Immunology Research at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). I truly love sports, photography, animals, gastronomy, music and nature. I am a very active and social person who loves to make diverse type of plans and share my free time with friends and family. I have always been fascinated by science. Since I studied Biotechnology, I have ensured that I want to dedicate my life to this astonishing area. Immunology is one of the fields in which I am most interested. In particular, I am very attracted to the pathological face of the Immune System, such as allergy and autoimmune diseases. It is absolutely astonishing how a very friend of ours, that keeps us alive every day (the Immune System) is also capable of hurting us in such a powerful way as to develop quite severe illnesses. Yet little is known about some of these pathologies, and therefore the way to treat and cure them, so a lot of research must be done to understand the mechanisms underlying them. Because of these interests, I performed my final degree project at the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB), about T cell exhaustion in cancer, and my master’s thesis in the Araceli Diaz Perales’ Lab at the CBGP, on the development of epithelial in vitro models for the study of allergic sensitisation. For these reasons, I am certainly thankful for having the opportunity to be researching now in this laboratory, surrounded by extraordinary and outstanding people from whom I will learn a lot.
